Dr. Joseph Helms has been at the forefront of medical acupuncture education and propagation in North America for 30 years. Since 1980 he and his colleagues in the Helms Medical Institute have delivered their "Medical Acupuncture for Physicians" training program to 6000 physicians. In 2009 the HMI program was modified for a military audience, and has graduated 100 active duty physicians in the US Air Force, Navy, and Army. Dr. Helms is the founding president of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture and serves on acupuncture standardization committees for the World Health Organization. He is author of the textbook Acupuncture Energetics: A Clinical Approach for Physicians. He is adjunct clinical professor in the Division of Medical Acupuncture at Stanford Medical School and has a private practice in Berkeley, California.
