Dr. Gitkind received his medical degree from the University of Massachusetts in 1985 and completed his internship and residency at Worcester Memorial Hospital in Worcester, MA. He completed a fellowship in gastroenterology through Tufts University School of Medicine (Faulkner, Lemuel Shattuck, and St. Elizabeth's Hospitals) in 1990. In 2003 Dr. Gitkind collaborated with a multidisciplinary team in the development of a weight management center based at the University Campus of UMass Memorial Medical Center. The UMass Memorial Weight Center offers comprehensive services including lifestyle-based programs and bariatric surgery. The Weight Center is accredited as a Level Ia bariatric surgery center by the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Gitkind devotes his non-clinical professional time to work in the area of quality and patient safety as a Physician Quality Officer for UMass Memorial Medical Center. His responsibilities include staff education around Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals and work on various clinical quality initiatives.
